Biographical Profile
Sheila Shaw joined Irwin Siegel Agency, Inc. (ISA) in August, 1992
as an Underwriter for the Developmental Disabilities Program. She
was promoted to a Senior Underwriter in 1993 and assumed Underwriting
responsibility for the large accounts, which included accounts with
premiums of $300,000.00 and over.
Ms. Shaw was promoted to Assistant Vice President of Underwriting
in 1997 and held that position until December, 2000 when she was
promoted to Vice President of Underwriting. She currently manages
three underwriting regions, with an Assistant Vice President of
Underwriting, two Regional Underwriting Supervisors and 22 Underwriters/Assistant
Underwriters. Sheila has been instrumental in the successful development
of ISA's underwriters during the last six (6) years.
Prior to joining ISA, Ms. Shaw worked for Markel Corporation as
an Underwriter for a program that insured Summer Camps, Day Cares
and YMCA/YWCAs. Her underwriting responsibilities included reviewing
submissions for eligibility, determining premium required on new
and renewal business, placing facultative reinsurance as required
by underwriting guidelines, reviewing loss control surveys and recommendations
and following up for compliance. Markel employed Sheila from 1990
to 1992 when Markel opted to relocate their book of business to
their Glen Allen, VA headquarters.
Before joining Markel Corporation, Ms. Shaw worked for The Rhulen
Agency as a Senior Customer Service Representative in the Large
Commercial Lines Accounts area. She handled a diverse group of insureds
with account premiums over $200,000.00. Her responsibilities in
addition to the daily servicing of the accounts included preparing
new and renewal submissions to insurance markets, working with bid
specifications, preparing quote comparisons and quote proposals
and confirming that all coverage requested for the insured had been
provided. Sheila started at the Rhulen Agency in June 1984 in an
entry-level position of a clerk and developed her knowledge and
understanding of coverage and the insurance industry through on
the job training and educational courses related to the insurance
field. Sheila remained with the Rhulen Agency until their merger
with Markel Corporation in 1990.
Ms. Shaw received her Associate in Underwriting designation in
1994 and has completed and passed the national exam for CPCU 7 course
on management. Sheila attended and successfully completed the 12-part
Crestcom Advanced Management course in May, 2001. In addition, she
has attended various insurance workshops and skill development courses.
